Articulation

Articulation disorder is the inability to produce sounds correctly. Sounds may be distorted, left off, or changed. By the age of 8 all sounds should be produced accurately.

Both children and adults can present with an articulation disorder. Adults may present with an articulation disorder left from childhood or they may have acquired it later due to head trauma, stroke, or disease.

Articulation therapy is recommended based on the following:

  • Evaluation of speech developmental norms (refer to chart below)
  • Intelligibility (i.e., how well is the person understood by others)
  • Error patterns
  • Oral motor skills
  • Impact on social and academic performance
  • Other medical concerns
